1982: lets start here is an exhibition themed around the year the visual art institute (VAI) moved into the garfield schoolhouse. the exhibition looks back at the year 1982 through several different lenses; using a cross-section of ages and media. installation, video, and paintingsboth vintage '82 and newreflect the peculiar collision of pop-culture, science, and politics in a year when the computer was named time magazines man of the year, and the artificial heart, the compact disc, and michael jacksons thriller were released to the public.
due to the inclusion of artists born before, in, and just after 1982, a diverse yet consistent perspective is gained on a year perhaps not noted for its artistic significance as much as its media influence. via new approaches to marketing and textile, design, and colorin conjunction with the pop-culture explosion and the political tone of the timethe early 1980s marked the change of a generation, and the creation of a new one. through these artists different takes we experience an aesthetic born of the 80s.
