1982: LET'S START HERE
1982: let’s start here is an exhibition themed around the year the visual art institute (VAI) moved into the garfield schoolhouse. the exhibition looks back at the year 1982 through several different lenses; using a cross-section of ages and media. installation, video, and paintings—both vintage '82 and new—reflect the peculiar collision of pop-culture, science, and politics in a year when the computer was named time magazine’s man of the year, and the artificial heart, the compact disc, and michael jackson’s thriller were released to the public.

due to the inclusion of artists born before, in, and just after 1982, a diverse yet consistent perspective is gained on a year perhaps not noted for its artistic significance as much as its media influence. via new approaches to marketing and
textile, design, and color—in conjunction with the pop-culture explosion and the political tone of the time—the early 1980’s marked the change of a generation, and the creation of a new one. through these artists’ different takes we experience an aesthetic born of the 80’s.

artists: trent call, jan andrews, tessa lindsey, brian patterson, gentry blackburn, davina pallone, mary toscano, jim williams, and allison baar.
